A DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) is a virtual music recording studio, with multiple record tracks and studio effects.
I just tried several free DAW solutions. and I have to say REAPER is by far the best IMHO. Simple, stabile, intuitive, cool look and feel, great plugin support, superb tech quality features, just great.

Although it has no built in FX, the support for plugins compensates this absolutely. Not sure if the lot of plugins (VST and more) will vanish when I uninstall all the other apps that I installed for evaluation, it's however great.

Not freeware, but non-expiring shareware is it, so decide yourself.

After working some time with it I still like i very much. There´s a probem with latency when recording, so usually you have to move a recorded track slightly to make sure it´s set on the beat. The plugin collection is great. Saves you a lot of time you´d waste normally by searching for free hiquality FX plugins.

And since we´re at it: For the drums I´d reccomend "Hydrogen". This free tool allows to creatively create drumloops and tracks.
