I prefer semi-automatic procedural apps myself, like Wilbur, but sometimes you need to get your hands dirty and fully photoshop it. [edit] Forums don't like plain linky apparently, so you'll have to cut-and-paste... And if you map the handpainted map spherically [remapping (distorting) a "flat" image into a cylindrical projection] you'll need this "distortion" PhotoShop plug-in too: Spherical Mapping Corrector This filter produces texture map correction for spherical texture mapping.
