Hi i was wandering if anyone knows of a cheap or free modeling package which has the function of milkshape but also can do nurbs and spline modeling too, also able to load background images?

try silo3d

Does Silo support NURBS? I don't know much about Silo and the website is pretty unclear there.

The need for NURBS has me stumped. I know lots of good free/cheap polygon modeling packages, but for NURBS I don't know of anything. Other than animation tools like Maya the only NURBS modeler I know of is Rhino, and that costs like $800. Why do you need NURBS anyway? For everything except really exact industrial design purposes, subdivision surfaces (ie. polygons) are better.

trueSpace can do nurbs. I don't think Silo can. Nothing much at the low-end has them.

I haven't played with NURBS in Truespace (didn't even know Truespace supported NURBS,) but I doubt the support is any good. 3D Studio Max barely handles NURBS and that's a top-shelf animation tool; I shudder to imagine the tools in Truespace.

Mostly though I'm still curious why it matters. Goober, why do you need NURBS?

ok first that for the help so far. jhocking, i require nurbs and spline for some car tutorials i found, i really need most of the function like simetric copying and such because the models i wish to do are quite complex, i am wanting a good cheap modeling tool that can handle high poly models with no limits in it - (the car i'm trying to model i wish to contain an inside aswell) hope you can make sense of the above.

Milkshape can create a grid surface (in the extended primitives I think) and you just create one side of the car, select all, duplicate then flip. Hightlight all the points down the middle, Ctrl+shift+x to squash them all in the X axis then weld them all. Job done, I've done this quite a few times.

The only thing it can't do is spline so you've got to draw these manually.

"i am wanting a good cheap modeling tool that can handle high poly models with no limits in it..."

Hmm, while I prefer Wings3D: http://www.wing3d.com
you might try Art of Illusion: http://www.artofillusion.org/
or Hamapatch: http://www.geocities.com/hamapatch/program/
or Metasequoia: http://www21.ocn.ne.jp/~mizno/main_e.html

Although none of these do NURBS, you can fake them using splines. Don't know of any "low end" modelers that do NURBS. You'll have to export to another program to do rigging/uv mapping, etc...

ok thanks you all for your help, aslong as some programs have splines in them that will do, milkshape i do use but and having problems with and so with a good selection from all of you i sould find alot of them useful thanks.

using point to point modelling and subdivisions very accurate car models are done...

Blender has some shape of nurbs, also enough tools for accurate modelling. But perhaps 2% of the people that I recommend it end up saying they dealed well with it.

Hamapatch is pure pacthes (kindda splines forming curved surfaces) I have used it tracing spline curves, and exporting with hi res level of obj.U can even set then number of polys I think, in the output. It can get as accurate as u want.

Anyway,ANY modeller has point to point modelling and subdiv, or allmost any.

Is not the tool, but the skills ;)

metasequoia, hamapatch, wings3d, anim8or allow u to make it. SURE. :)

metasequoia has been used for airplanes for simulators, and it has better tools for point to point modelling than all the rest mentioned.Don't like much the tracing image solution but can do. Wings also..saw really accurate models with image plane ref planes and "contour tracing" (as it can't do point to point) Indeed, I use wings3d for this.

I uploaded some pics as a proof. from a BLENDER user:

and from a anim8or user (while I think Wings3d beats both...)

same software, another guy...

http://picserver.org/view_image.php/US09UR2TD488/picserver.jpeg

and another using other free moedlling package, Zmodeller..this guy didnt use subdivisions..., what a heck of a task...

But never ever judge a software for what certain user makes...one way or another it can be wrong...

Considering what you're asking for, I'd choose Blender, since it seems to have everything (if not then a derivative of some of the features you want) you want. Its UI is funky (I still can't figure it out), but given some time you'll have no trouble with it I expect.

Bob3d(Posted 2004) [#12]
I can deal with it already. But took me a while...

David819(Posted 2004) [#13]
ok thanks, i think i will try blender, and animator and some of the others thanks again for all the help :).

ayam.sourceforge.net

Now exports as obj and supports a nice set of nurbs tools.
