I know that it wasn't possible to use the Quake3 bsp files because Id did not want someone to use their compilation tools.
But now there seems to be some cool new compilation tools. http://shaderlab.com/
They are opensource!!

not quite. believe Ydnar has stated it's a derivative work and as such still subject to the limitations of use imposed by the id original. you can ask him directly, but i'm fairly certain that's the case. this comes up ALLLLLL the time.

quick check of the forum pretty much confirms what i'd previously read:

Can you tone down the swearing, please?

There is not one single quake 3 .map compiler out there that isn't based on the original id source. So forget about commercially using Q3 bsp's in your games...

Warren(Posted 2004) [#6]
Darn I didn't read that!
Seems like they had the Id originals.
Bush league!

Wiebo(Posted 2004) [#7]
If it was possible, I would've based my next game around it...

c5ven(Posted 2004) [#8]
well, there is one independent compiler...incomplete...slow progress...doesn't fully support Q3...never will they said...may or may not ever be of use to most peeps.....

sorry. no link. but it's in this forum somewhere....
