Hi All...

And I know what your gonna' say... I should of posted this on the CShop forum under the feedback section of josh's
forum...

Well... I'll get to that next, But Josh comes here too from
time to time, And I wanted to post these here as well to
hopfully get a chance at a possible quicker answer.
So here it goes...

The first thing that I had trouble with was the following:

1.) Made a room with 4 cylinders and 4 lights.
2.) Carved 4 cylinders, One in each room making them like a
broken pillar.

3.) Grouped everything in the room.
4.) Copied first room then pasted it 3 more times.
5.) Put all 4 rooms together and carved out a hole in each
wall.

6.) Went to calculate lights with Lightmap resolution set
at medium and Lightmap Size set at 1024x1024.

7.) The calculating of Lights was 2/3 of the way done and
then I recieved a "memory access violation" error
message!

8.) Then I recived another error message
saying "Lightmapper output failed".

Any clues as to what you think I should do here with this?

The next few bugs I spotted was related to the hollow
and carve functions of CShop4.1

Hollowing of Primitives
-----------------------

Cone doesn't hollow properly.
( Two thirds of the cone disappears when hollowed! )

Carving of Primitives
---------------------

Box being carved with Cylinder... Doesn't work properly!

Box being carved with Cone... Doesn't work properly!

Cylinder being carved with Cone... Doesn't work properly!

Cone being carved with Box... Doesn't work properly!

Cone being carved with Wedge... Doesn't work properly!

Cone being carved with Cylinder... Doesn't work properly!

There is also a problem when you create a rather large room
and the room doesn't fit when-in the view depth of the camera. Josh, Is there any way you might be able to include
an option to the user to let them adjust the view depth of
the camera in the Perspective view? Here's a screenshot
showing this:

Other than that... CShop4.1 works fine for me!

I think we got the idea about the broken carving after the first one.

On a positive note, you were right about this being the wrong place to post this. :)

Dr.Who,

Try to ensure before you carve that the shape you are cutting is bigger than the shape you are cutting into.

Worldcraft does the same thing. You can't have perfect carving routines. It should really only be used for trimming pieces off, not making your whole map.

Dr. Who,

Here's one I just made:

www.smartscreenuk.com/CShop_Carve.jpg

Lit inside and above.

It can be tricky, just be persistent and try different setups, don't keep setting it up the same way if it fails.

With the lightmap at 1024*1024 problem, did you save the map before you lit it? If you did, try a lower setting, start at 256 and medium, and work up, you should find it is okay.

yeah only use Carve when absolutley needed, or on very simple objects.
(But i also tried a few shapes and it went a little nuts..heh)
And like Josh said, Worldcraft does the samething.

@halo

I was just wondering if you was planning to add a sphere
into the primitive set in CShop?

And can you tell me where I can download the Singularity Engine at by any chance???

Thank's man!

I've been thinking about buying gile[s] for my lightmapping
as it seems to do a fantastic job on just about everything!

i've runinto the same carving anomolies as DocWho... WC does a similar thing...

hey IPete... how the heck did ya get that so clean ???? :)

[added]

hey, you guys got me thinking... this time a lil outside of the box...

hey, DocWho... try this technique... it just came to me (i'm slow ya know so don't laff) and, it so far, it seems to work all the time... (although it may be a lil round about)...

(1) you wanna carve a cone or a cylinder out of a box, use four (4) smaller boxes joined (grouped) together to create a single box as so...

(2) create your drill, a cylinder or a cone... place in in the center of the group... and carve...

(3) this is what you should get...

this technique can be used for carving at various offsets (the corners) and should work with other primiticve shapes as well if the same divide and carve methodology is applied... i'm trying a few now...

cones seem to be the most problematic... cylinders seem to work in most cases as both drill and target.
