I'm looking for a good terrain creation software...I tried Geoscape3d but for some reason it won't run on my computer. I know there are more of them out there...any suggestions?

Well there's Bryce and Terragen, to name two. Bryce may do a bit more than you need for game-related stuff.

Try Total Terrain - and/or Terrain Shader 2

Both used to be at the Blitz Showcase and might be at BlitzCoder.com

Thanks, I couldn't find Terrain Shader 2 but Total Terrain seems to work good enough for my needs. It's also totally free, Terragen is only for non-commercial usage...

And I've used bryce before, it is good but a little heavy(and expensive).

You can find terrain shader 1 here

Look in downloads
You'll have to ask Rob about the new version.

I dont know about these sorts of things really but just wondered why terragen cant be used commercially - what use is that!? Is that because you need to pay for the full version or something? If so, I noticed a 3D mag is giving a free FULL version away on its cover disk, if that's any use. Think the mag was 3D World, or something, but that's here in the UK - dont know if you get it in the States. :/

Yeah, Terragen is free for non-commercial use. You can use it commercially if you register it.

World-Machine ( http://www.world-machine.com ) is nice. Thats free.

Have fun.

Don't be fooled by 3DWorld magazine, the free "full" Terragen on issue 49's cover CD is nothing more than the non-commercial version that you can download from the Terragen website! A quote from their website says:

"And on the cover CD, we'll even be showing you how to create your own Lord of the Rings-style character, with the first of a series of tutorial videos explaining how to model, rig and animate a troll. You'll also find the non-commercial edition of Terragen: a fantastic Mac and PC application for creating photorealistic rendered landscapes."

Don't know if you're using Total Terrain 1 or 2 - 2 is better, you can paint onto the terrain and it's a lot easier to use. Get it from my website (click "all seeing i" in my sig)!

For generating terrains to use in Blitz3D Terragen is only so-so (it's mostly designed for rendering images,) but for creating skybox images it is excellent. For that purpose alone the software is worth the $80 registration fee.
