Importing into Character FX

I've reached the point where I feel I really need to get to grips with animating, and Character FX is probably going to be easier than character animation in 3dsMax. So I'm gonna evaluate it for 30 days before registering ( or not. )

Problem #1: How can I import a static mesh into Character FX without losing smoothing groups? I exported from 3dsMax to .3ds and the smoothing groups have all gone. It's just smoothing every triangle on the entire mesh ( which looks pretty poor. )

Would OBJ work any better? Surely I don't have to manually cut the mesh up in Max before I export? :(

I never had any problems with 3ds in CFX with smoothing groups. well, I used autosmooth. I only lose smoothing when I export DXF from Max.

Probably you have to reset xform before you export it?
