Is it possible to disable the default recording device in Windows?

Basically what I want to do is so that the microphone is disabled at all time, until I hold down a specific key.
Anyone know how I could do that? :o

Is this for a push-to-talk program? Usually you just ignore input from the microphone unless the key is pressed down. You don't want to fiddle with the system settings of your user's computer. They might not appreciate that.

Yeah you're right Czar and all your points are correct, but this is not for anyone except me.
The thing is that I have two applications that uses my mic (sometimes 3) and one of them do no support push-to-talk, instead uses my mic at all time, which is really bugging me. x)
So I'd like to simply disable my mic until I hold down a key. :)
