Point and click adventure dialog system?

I've made a point and click adventure engine to make monkey island style adventure games. I've got the rendering ,inventory and path finding systems sorted. But have had a block on how to go about the dialog system. I've googled for info for a few hours now and can find only vague discriptions of how people have programmed this area of the game. It's been suggested by a friend that doing it with XML would be a good way by I've never used XML. I know brucey has a module for XML which I'm sure is good. Any ideas welcome.

Ok I've done the ask questions before searching this forum thing that's really annoying. Sorry http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=93104#1089243 this post gave me a few ideas but I'm still after a few more people opinions on this.

Monkey Island et al were made using the SCUMM engine, for which emulators now exist. Maybe these emulators are open source and you can look for examples there.

I've used Brucey's xml module and can help with the technical side of it, if you get stuck. It's a very good module.

You're very lucky to tackle this style of game as you have a complete game editor to use as reference: AGS (short for Adventure Game Studio).

This page explains their dialogue system: http://www.adventuregamestudio.co.uk/acintro8.htm

Can't believe I missed that, Thanks Kryyzon.
