2D 'Side on' Water Ripple Effect

Hi all, I'm making a simple 'bomb the submarines' type game, where you control a ship at the top of the screen, and have to drop depth charges on submarines below the water. Does anyone have any suggestions on how I could produce that 'shimmering water' effect? It doesn't have to be something that gets too involved, but just something that stops the water looking so stagnant. If I can find any examples of what I mean (picture-wise) I'll pop a link on here.
