Testing for sound card

Can the same test that was used to check for a soundcard under Blitz3D also be used with BlitzMax? In other words, can I check to see if a WAV file loads and if it doesn't I know there is no soundcard installed?

If this is no longer the case, how do I check?

Max is supposed to be able to load wavs with no problem so I dont think that would work.

Bugger! Anyone know how to check then? I don't really want to go down the route of forcing the player to go through a setup dialogue before they run the game for the first time.

Why? it won't crash if there's no sound card. It'll just be silent.

JazzieB(Posted 2005) [#5]
Are you sure about that? The reason why I'm asking is because Blitz3D did crash if you tried to play a sound on a system with no soundcard.

You'll have to email them to confirm it.

Does this help...
Soundcard check

BlitzMax uses a dummy audio device if there is no soundcard so sounds can still be loaded and playing sounds will not cause a crash.

Great. Thanks for the info.

Would be nice to see that soundcard check in the official mod (don't really want to tamper with anything!).
