Finding Surfaces

He everyone,

Is it possible to find a surface based on some attribute I may want to set in a modelling program?

I am looking to created a level made of a grid meshes, each mesh defines 1 ground surface which is the surface the character walks on.

Is this possible? Ideally I would like to spocify the ground surface in the modelling program and have it exported, I am assuming I would have to use some sort of Brush or Material name to do so?

I've done something similar before using special characters (!$ etc) at the start of the texture filename. This is similar to how HalfLife and Quake used to work.
