Is there a way to repaint the contents of canvases while you resize the window? At the moment it draws trash until the resize completes (on Windows XP) then you get 20 repaint messages.

The workaround I use for this is to set a timer for repainting all canvases currently in view.

I considered using eventhooks, but I thought there might be a flag or something a little more elegant.

Assari has done a tutorial in his MaxGUI series on EventHooks, (link here).

I suggest you have a look at it as I found it really useful and after seeing the advantages, I always use eventhooks to draw canvases even on small apps.
