bang for buck

ATI - 9600 xt
nVidia - 6600

Go for a nVidia Geforce 6600 GT

Depends on your target audience. If want more people to run your game, you shouldn't haven anything better than an ATI 9600 or 9800. Only a relative handful of PC owners have better cards than that (and zero notebook owners do).

What junkster said. I develop on a laptop specifically for this reason--if it runs well on my laptop, it'll run well on pretty much -anything-...

Also depends what operating system you're planning to use.

Under Linux for example, NVidia cards generally have more featureful drivers, however ATI cards generally have more stable drivers.

I would just hang on to the GeForce 4ti card for testing, and splurge on a nice fast ATI card for everyday life.

There's a new top-of-the-range ATI card out soon. I'd wait until that happens before making your decision. If anything it will bring the prices of existing cards down.

The 6600GT runs the Max3D demo very well though.

As I see it, it depends on whether you're wanting the latest/greatest or the sort of card that your likely audience is likely to have. I used to go with nVidia, but switched to an ATI 9600 Pro for that reason.
