I paid double VAT?!?!

BlitzMax Forums/BlitzMax Beginners Area/I paid double VAT?!?!

GfK(Posted 2004) [#1]
Just bought BlitzMax - shareit said "£43 including VAT". Went to buy it and it charged me another £7 VAT *on top* of the £43 that supposedly already included VAT??!

One question - WTF?!?!!

Amon_old(Posted 2004) [#2]
Lol,

come to think of it, why was there a second vat charge?

It never crossed my mind that I paid vat twice but now that you mention it, WTF!!

Beaker(Posted 2004) [#3]
That was a bit odd.

Floyd(Posted 2004) [#4]
Well, the price is 80 US dollars, which plainly does not include VAT.

The exchange rate as of two minutes ago makes this 41.2 UK pounds.

So I would say the tax was only paid once. The phrase "£43 including VAT" was wrong.

Kanati(Posted 2004) [#5]
probably shoulda been 43 pounds PLUS VAT... Btw... What's VAT?

Kanati

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#6]
VAT = Value Added Tax (Sales tax) only on luxury goods. (i.e. not a cereal or a book).

VIP3R(Posted 2004) [#7]
Where did it say inc. vat?

This is how it reads on share*it:

Price: GBP 43.21
Orders for EU customers are also subject to VAT.

I just double checked, I've definitely only paid VAT once.

@Kanati: VAT = Value Added Tax in UK and EU also known as rip-off

[edit] oh Perturbatio got there first :)

zeedoktor(Posted 2004) [#8]
Come buy in Switzerland, where VAT is not applicable to EU customers, and even if you buy, it's just 7.6%....

BlitzSupport(Posted 2004) [#9]
Everywhere I look on the ShareIt order page (without actually attempting to buy), it says that orders will be charged £43 plus VAT if applicable, for both European and UK customers.

Where exactly does it say "inc VAT"?

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#10]
I'm guessing he just misread it :)

ImaginaryHuman(Posted 2004) [#11]
What does it really REALLY matter, it's worth it isn't it?

flying willy(Posted 2004) [#12]
I paid £50+ ukbp, it said £43.... I DO take issue to £7 on top if this is the case.

Please keep us informed, gfk.

you having a laugh skunk? you really THAT poor?

Perturbatio(Posted 2004) [#14]
from my order:
Qty. Item Net Price GST % Total
==========================================================================
 1 x BlitzMax (MacOS)
   (Product ID: 300001132) GBP 43.60 7.63 17.50% 51.23

GST = General Sales Tax (or VAT)

Don't move to Sweden, I pay 20 US$ in Vat. But its worth it.

I wish! VAT applies to virtually everything nowadays. It almost came to the point where children's clothes would be VAT-eligable (fortunately the govt. decided otherwise).

Barnabius(Posted 2004) [#17]
Not our government. Here (in Croatia) we have VAT added to everything and it's at a nice "low" rate of 22%. Luckily we are still not EU members so I did not have to pay VAT for BlitzMax. :)

"Value Added Tax"
Seriously, who the hell do they think they're kidding? Are they trying to make it sound like it's a good thing? ;]

We got 24%, 25% from next year, sigh......

But, yes I suppose BM is worth it :)

I think it's just more noticeable because ShareIT uses a none-too-generous exchange rate. When I checked the price ( $80 ) at the current exchange rate, it was dead on £41, but ShareIT conveniently made it £43.25 in their calculations. These sort of conversions seem to have become more common since they were taken under the Digital River brand, but I'm probably just being paranoid.
