Graphic design advice

BlitzMax Forums/BlitzMax Beginners Area/Graphic design advice

I've been messing with Blitz for years but I'm devoid of any artistic talent whatsoever, and have very limited knowledge on using custom graphics in games etc. I want to start making things look a little better with the games I tinker with so I'm looking for any kind of back-to-basics tutorial on how to put graphics into games without having problems like the background colours being incorrect, image sizing and stuff like that.

Does anyone know of a resource or tutorials that might help with this and advice on a good tool for learning to do graphics better for someone who's been used to stuff like Deluxe Paint on the old Amiga, rather than layer stuff like Photoshop?

Thanks in advance.

Nobody has any advice here? Or can point me to something? Random googling isn't that great.

Maybe you're asking in the wrong place?

Try "General Help".

It may be more frequented.

Ok, thanks Bruce.

Cheeky comment:hire someone! ;-)

All well and good but that doesn't help with the programming side of it and I don't write stuff that's worth selling so why would I throw money at something I just tinker with. If I was better, and less lazy, so I wrote something sell-able then I could look at it differently, but I haven't.

The best program for making graphics is the Corel Paint Shop Pro.
Is very easy and is similar to deluxe paint.
If you want the deluxe paint for dos , there are patched versions which work in newest graphic cards and you can save up to 256 colors.

The Corel Paint Shop so not much expensive , I found it in my country for about 100 euros. You don't break the bank like Photoshop. 3500 euros
The deluxe paint can be founded here:

http://www.phatcode.net/downloads.php?sub=utilities

If you find a very very old demo of Paint Shop pro 5 there is a trial for 120 days

http://www.oldapps.com/Paint_Shop_Pro.php

The deluxe paint needs dosbox:
www.dosbox.com

If you want brushes for your paintshop pro go here:
http://free-brushes.com/paint-shop-pro/page/4/

If you are making game and need fonts you need to go here:
http://www.1001freefonts.com/

Also you can play with color palettes , in the deluxe paint site there are and palette editors to play.

Here I am making a lots of graphics by hand and I use Corel Paint Shop Pro and Deluxe paint. Few times if I want to do some text effect I use Gimp.
There are a lots of free graphics and you can change everything and you will not have copyright problems.

also www.deviantart.com
have a lots of free graphics. If you concern you can ask and permission from the artist to use their graphics or re-design by your own.

The question you asked is about graphics design not programming.
You can create stuff which is very good and worth of selling.
It depends what kind of game you are creating , if your game is 2D or 3D.

Here I am making my Eye of the Beholder IV and the graphics are great I have created a lots of graphics , I used some graphics from others and I changed graphics and I even purchased and new graphics too.

You will create something slowly and never say I don't write a stuff that's worth of selling. When I begun with my game I was started with gwbasic and then with quick basic 4.5 without graphics and without knowledge and now I am in very good level to create something from scratch or even change some existing image or create a new one from existing one.

I asked a lots of people and I visited a lots of forums and I received a lots of help from many kind people from here too.
I am very happy to able to produce very nice work. :)
