Anyone know how/where I can get/create a color coded elevation image of any particular geographical area?

i.e. So I can use it for a terrain in blitz?

The only thing I could find was AutoCad Land, which I'm guessing costs an arm and a leg....

There are some shuttle scans of the Earth here: http://www.webgis.com/srtm3.html

The resolution isn't very high (in videogame terms), but I don't think you'll find maps with better resolution that that which weren't created by hand because trees and buildings and so on would presumably interfere with the terrain if the cells got any smaller.

Don't ask me how to load the data into Blitz3D, I have no idea and doubt anyone has done it before.

I've used the USGS seamless data before. I used MicroDem to output the data into heightmaps or OBJ formats.

beautiful- thanks to both- I'll have to dig into those later as the storms seem to have affected my connection speed. - lucky if that's my worst problem...

I made a tutorial for my BlitzTiles years ago, but I dunno if all links there still work but you will find very useful information about scale and where and how to grab elevation data:
