Anybody know how to get digital mapping data into a mesh or a heightmap?

In fact, does anybody know where to get it from?

DEM files are pretty easy to read, typically raw dumps of 2D float or int arrays.

Google GTOPO30 and SRTM30Plus for sources of earth data.

Theres a tutorial somewhere on the web (sorry don't have a link to hand) where you can select a region from google earth to export the geometry data using a plugin and convert using microDEM IIRC with hints on how to make the data readable for common useages such as height maps.

John, for my BlitzTiles project I created a PDF How to create real Terrains for BlitzTiles in which I desribe how to extract real data from the web, import/export it with 3DEM and Wilbur and create a map in L3DT. L3DT is able to export a mesh which should be the easiest way.

The Example from the PDF: The Grand Canyon made with USGS data

If you have questions just ask me.

EDIT: The URL for Wilbur has changed, find it here:
