Hi, is there any code around that would fill a texture with a 'picture' similar to some of the photographs of a galaxy?

i.e. can a nice galaxy photo be created by code?

Thanks
Jim

I don't think so, put possibly.

You may as well use a real photograh/picture as a texture.

By Glaalxy I presume you mean Nebulae, the colourful backdrops these games have. I think it would be possible to create them algorithmically, but don't think there's and current system. I have created good looking pseudo-nebulae using Corel's Paint. If you splat down some colours and swirl them around, it can work well, and that process could be automated.

Pity MykeP isn't still around. He wrote a nebula generator in Blitz. Output was tileable, too.

Wouldn't know where to find it now.

I'd try to find some photos at the nasa, AFAIK they alo offer a lot of royalty free material.

How about this. It may help if you can't get any code to do it:-

Had a mess about with procedural textures in Lightwave, the stars I quickly added in a paint proggy :)

This the sort of thing you're after? If so I can make you a couple. I'll just do a plain nebula, you could enhance them with your own stars e.t.c

Thanks guys,

Tom - this is exactly what i'm after.

In particular m004 - perfect colours and not to dark & not to bright.
I'm going to use these for now.
I might ask you to do some more if i get far enough in what i'm doing.(if that's ok?)

Thanks
Jim

No problem :)

Hello again Tom, could you do me another one 'identical' to before except without the really bright bits in m000.png and m005.png

Thanks
Jim

what you see there is called 'skybox' and if you are owner of half life or counterstrike, there are lots of other skyboxes!

or grab them from here:

Devils Child, these are 'skybox' what i'm looking for is what Tom did but without some of the bright parts.

Tom,

can I use these for my Blibs Screen saver - they are really cool?

I would really like some more :-)

Also how did you create them? I could probably create a nice looking space scene in photoshop but how did you arrange it so they all line up nicely etc. I have lightwave too...

Morbius(Posted 2006) [#15]
Tom:

That's a great looking skybox. Would you be willing to give short tutorial on how you made the pictures in Lightwave. How did you make the seamless?

Thanks much

Mike

Any new ones? MANY THANKS!

gg space scene!

looks like you can do procedural textures with this free (?) app:
