Hi, I want to know if there s a way to Convert the .M2 file from WORLD OF WARCRAFT to something usable with Blitz3D like LoadMD2() , AnimateMD2(), LoadAnimSeq, etc...

I ve found 2 programs that can play all the WoW Model animation (character, Creature, Particle, Spell)

The best one:
http://www.curse-gaming.com/mod.php?addid=657

The second one:
http://wowmapview.sourceforge.net/wowmodelview/
note that you can export the WoW texture with it

For sure to start the program you must have the WoW installed to be able to open the .MPQ

So if someone can help me, and maybe help alot of others programmors to acces those amazing 3d objet. just reply plz.

Good day

GMax can load them - you'll probably need a plug-in - not sure if it can convert them - I don't have WOW.

I'm picking up on the fact that WOW has at least 2 separate build versions - not everyone's copy of WOW seems to have the models in .M2 format - so, there is another potential option here to get a format which is more easy to convert - not sure how this affects option 1 (GMax) above.

Your third option is to keep tuned in to the WOW modding forums - you can bet your life that someone is working on convertors, coz some people live and breathe for converting model formats.

Thx for the answer puki. I just made more research and found somes others stuffs that people must see.

WoW Map Viewer:
http://wowmapview.sourceforge.net/

A nice page with a lot of informations about .M2 conversion:

Import World of Warcraft M2 models files into 3dsmax along with Gmax:

If someone knows more about this, don't be shy and reply.

Good day

You do realise, Raven, that it's illegal to re-use their models or animation sequences, right?

I always use commercial stuff - as long as you don't release/distribute it you should be okay. I've nicked gigabytes worth of sound/music/textures/models out of commercial software.

Banshee(Posted 2005) [#6]
I guess it's not strictly legit but I agree with Puki, you bought a product and so you should be allowed to use it how you want provided you dont infringe on other people, who really cares what you do on your own PC?

RifRaf(Posted 2005) [#7]
Im sure Blizzard cares.
When you start extracting and converting their models, you are infringing on their IP. they own the art and models.. Just because you bought the game, you dont have rights to the raw materials used in it.

That being said.. there is nothing stopping you, and nobody can do anything unless you get caught distributing it. ect. Im not shy about peeking at work of games for insperation or basic "good modelling" guidelines ect.

Ok little discusion here hehe

I don t care using WoW or others stuff as long as I'm using it in a pure personal way. I won't use any of this in a "real" puplic release.

I only want to save ALOT OF TIME with the model creation.
It s just fun to use nice model while you program.

What you can do is use the wowmodelviewer program to open the Wow MPQ archives

Then find models, and if you right click you can save it as the .M2 it came as.

Or you can use wowmodelviewer's built in exporter.
Export, uncheck Initial pose, and then pick a file format
like OBJ, or 3DS

I might choose something like OBJ, then use Chumbalumbasoft's Milkshape3d to re-export as B3D.

Hope this helps.

....you do realize you just answered a question that was asked at least 5 years ago?

I've almost done that a few times when using the search, thankfully I didn't actually do it, haha!

I often wonder why forums don't insert a highly visible banner at the top of topics over say 6 months old basically saying "This thread is over 6 months old" I've often been almost caught out by it - generally when someone else ressurects a dead topic.

One of the few (only?) good things about TGC's forums is that threads over X months old are automatically locked. It may occasionally be inconvenient, but I think that - more often than not - the effect is more positive than negative.
