Blitzcc, blitz's IDE, etc. will not work for me.
Why? I don't know. I think the latest IndeED beta buggared an evironment variable. While I am completely respectful of Michael for that product, and I quite like IndeED, I question why a single program must, by routine, make so many dangerous accesses to the system (causing new memory access errors with every update and forcing me to turn off DEP for it).

However, pointing the finger at IndeED is just a hunch. It may very well have not been the program, however much it may seem like it was.

Anyway, to the problem:
Blitz will not start. Neither will an IDE which makes use of Blitzcc.exe.
When I run Blitz the normal way (Blitz3D.exe), I get this error:

---------------------------
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
---------------------------
Runtime Error!
Program: C:\Program Files\Blitz3D\bin\ide.exe
abnormal program termination

Checking deeper, I opened Bin/ide.exe:

---------------------------
Blitz Basic
---------------------------
blitzpath environment variable not found!

First thing I did was reinstall Blitz3d and reupdate it. Nothing changed.
Restarted the computer.
Nothing changed.

So... any ideas?
How do I revert to how things were about 2 hours ago?

The 'enviroment variable' error happens because Blitz3D.exe didn't run.

So the question is how to get Blitz3D.exe to work. Did you uninstall before doing the reinstall? Sometimes that fixes a misconfigured application.

Picklesworth(Posted 2005) [#3]
Tried that just now.

Nope.

Also, when I run just Blitz3d.exe, I get no error. It just all becomes a process and stops. Thus, I have to go through the task manager to kill the process entires: Blitzcc, and ide.exe.

Maybe it's the dreaded and mystifying toolbar.bmp problem.

Look in the \cfg folder for the various .bmp files. Load them into MS Paint, or whatever, and save them back as 24-bit .bmp files.

I know this sounds ridiculous, but it may actually be the solution.

Nope.
It's even more dreaded and mystifying than we imagined!

If I need to run a system restore, I will be forced to take drastic measures and... kill a few large insects!!!
Perfect timing too. Right when I figure out the stupid mistake behind the problem that's haunted me for 3 days straight!

Okay, I'm down to my last idea.

Do you have any userlibs? A bad decls file can prevent Blitz from starting.

The easy way to disable them is to rename the userlibs folder.

There is not one thing more embarassing than a 533 word thread about a problem that should have been obvious from the start.
Thank you Floyd.
