Help starting a 3d racing game

Hello guys. I would like to write a 3d racing game and wonder if you could point me to some links with materials that could help me. I am willing to develop something like Nascar Racing, etc... as opposed to Need for Speed Underground. Also, I want it to be a very simple 3D racing game. I am not aiming at any high-quality game at all. I am mostly interested in learning how to build the tracks and the physics for the cars. Thanks, Rui |

If this is your first (or one of your first) projects I would steer clear (no pun intended) of car physics are they're very complex. Hover cars are much much simpler so I'd aim for something like that instead. |

Thanks Rob. As a matter of fact, I have been developping 2D games for quite some time now. I do not intend this racing game to be released or anything like that. It is the physics that I am interest in. I am not particularly interested in gameplay or creating something revolutionary. Car Physis + automatic camera selection is what I really want to learn by writting this one game. If course, tracks development/editing would be a plus, but that is not among my priorities. BTW, I have checked your racing-spheres game. Very cool game. |

I suppose the physics can be as complex as you want them to be .. generally simplicity but a good feel works best for most. If you're going for realism I would recommend looking at a few of these sites in terms of car / racing physics. http://www.racer.nl/reference/carphys.htm http://www.miata.net/sport/Physics/04-No-Centrifugal.html There is also a good tut by Marco Monster which I don't have a link for. If your plan on writing your own physics engine rather than using the ODE or TOMAMAK wrappers then I'd recommend looking into verlet integration ... It took alot of effort but I have un-breakable system working , including variable suspension , rear / front / 4 wheel drive catered for, car/car rigid body collisions , self-righting etc.. and it works very well. Unfortunately, I cannot share the verlet code as I'm working with an artist and hope to make a couple of quid from it. |

Also if you are looking to implement computer driver AI then here's a nice little tutorial. The code snippets are in Visual Basic, but if you follow the concepts you should be able to program some fairly decent AI. http://www.rookscape.com/vbgaming/tutBS.php |

In my copy of B3D there was a sample folder named birdie I think... somewhere in there was an example of a tilemap over landscape that was in effect a simple race game waiting to be a born... I deleted it or I would be more helpful. Anyone know what I am talking about? RZ |

Hmm, I actually though about helping you out Rui. I've been working on my own Racing simulator myself, trying to make it as accurate as I can. It's been coming along nicely, but I've shelved it for a while now. Thought about digging it up for this... Until, of course I realized who you were. It's too bad you have to hide under a (nick)name change because of the stunts you pulled in the past... A LOT of time I invested for you. And what came out of it??? Nothing but a bunch of lies. And then you disappear. A note to other members of the community: Don't waste any valuable time helping this individual. He'll just use you. http://www.blitzbasic.com/Community/posts.php?topic=29193#318317 |

I was working on a project Havor Havok, wich i dont think ill get a chance to revisit. The Car models, and track models were made by psionic, and i have them up for sale if you would like them, heres a pic of psionics renders. shots http://www.psionic3d.co.uk/cgi-bin/imageFolio.cgi?action=view&link=Art%20Galleries/3D%20Game%20Art&image=5hovercars.jpg&img=&tt= |

Having done Maluch Racer 2, I can tell you: making racing game cost a lot of work. If you haven't got a team, a lot of spare time and money, forget it! ftp://ftp.play.com.pl/demo/Maluch%20Racer2_demo_setup.exe |
