I want to start learning how to do some basic 3d modeling. Can someone give me some recommendations on some free 3D modelers to get my feet wet with?

Wings 3d My favorite
Anim8tor nice but you can't export the animations to blitz.
Check out the content creation section of this site it lists a bunch of modelers with basic descriptions and then a fine debate on those descriptions.lol

yes wings3d is the easiest to pick up, and i have the best results with it

You best not ignore Blender. It's an open-source modeler that has become the prime freeware modeling application for any platform.
