Sprites vs Images

I am making a 2d game and trying to figure out which should I use sprites or images.

Which one uses more Video ram and which one is fastest?

there seems to be no disadvantage using sprites on anything that isnt stoneage, er,,,,,, like your PC im afraid. 2D for you laddie.

running anything above 320 * 240 even 2D will run slow as F*ck im sure
