Modulate2X Test

Blitz3D Forums/Blitz3D Programming/Modulate2X Test

marksibly(Posted 2003) [#1]
Hi,

I've would like to add support for the Modulate2X and Modulate4X texture blend modes.

Before first I want to check there aren't gonna be any major compatiblity headaches with them. Demo here...

http://www.blitzbasic.com/tmp/mod2x.zip

You should see 3 Blitz3D logos, each progressively brighter, like this:

Please give this a test and post:

* Whether or not it works!

* What GfxDriver3D version is printed on the screen.

* Your Graphics setup info - graphics card, DX version and OS.

Thanks!

ErikT(Posted 2003) [#2]
Loads and executes but looks wrong: I get three grey untextured spheres. The one in the middle (Modulate 2X) has a highlight with a large radius and the two others a narrow radius.

The GfxDriver version print says '100'.

Graphics card:
ATI Rage Mobility AGP
4 mb video mem
DX 8.1
WinXP

Well the gfx card is sh#te so it's only to be expected I suppose.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#7]
And what's textureblend Texture, 4 supposed to do? :-)

Erik:

You did run the EXE and not try to run the Blitz source provided which won't work because your version of Blitz doesn't have blending, right? :-)

If ya did that though you proabably wouldn't have just seen gray squares.

And anyhow if all you saw were grey squares I'm betting no transparency works on your card. :-) I had a guy try to run my game on a card like that and he had weird glitches too.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#8]
Just ran the demo. Works, 110, and my video card is an All in Wonder Radeon (Radeon 7500 equivalent) and I'm running DX 9, and Win XP.

Hey Mark are we gonna get Modulate 2x and 4x ENTITY Blend modes as well? Cause those would be real useful too, and it would be a terrrrrrrrible oversight not to include them. :-)

Yeah, sorry about all those bumps :) I'll test it on some of the college computer and report back!

xlsior(Posted 2003) [#29]
It does NOT work for me:

The GfxDriver version print says '100'.

The left and middle image look identical to each other, and appear a little but more dithered / less blurry than your examples screenshot

The one on the right fails completely: instead of a sphere with a texture map, I see a pure white box covering the location where the sphere should have been.

Videocard: 3dfx Voodoo3 3000 AGP, 16 MB

I know you're joking but I honestly don't think bully tatics work on Mark. What ya gotta do is provide concrete evidence and a compelling reason for him to add it. If he likes it then this is the result :)

Works fine.

GfxDriverCaps3D: 110
Inno3D GeForce 2 MX (32Mb), DX9.0b, WinXP Pro.

I have a question though - apart from making textures look horribly 'over-exposed', what does this actually do?

GfK: Take a look here

elias_t(Posted 2003) [#45]
It works here.

GfxDriverCaps3D: 110
GeForce 4 MX , DX9.0b, Win98 SE.
GeForce 4 MX , DX9.0b, Win2k.

sswift(Posted 2003) [#46]
It doesn't make textures look horribly over exposed. It brightens them when the color in the lightmap is greater than 127, and darkens them when it is less than 127. 2x brightens them up to 2x their orginal brightness.

Without 2x blending lightmaps can only make textures darker than they are by default. This does not look very realistic, and scenes often appear dull.

No One Lives Forever - 2x Multiply
http://www.gamescreenshots.com/fullpic.asp?category=pc&pic_id=35&game_id=1&gallery=0&picOrder=0

Quake 2 - 1x Multiply
http://www.gamescreenshots.com/fullpic.asp?category=pc&pic_id=36693&game_id=415&gallery=0&picOrder=0

This is a better comparison though. This is a dark area from Serious Sam. Note how the lighting is much more vibrant. That's 2x in action.
http://www.gamescreenshots.com/fullpic.asp?category=pc&pic_id=67461&game_id=21&gallery=0&picOrder=0

Too bad video card drivers can't force 2x blending. :-) Cause I'd like to see Quake 2 with it on. I bet it'd look a whole lot better than it did 16 dithered 16 bit color on my Voodoo all those years ago. Too bad it wasn't that good a game.

Frank Taylor.... the Ti4600 most certainly will do 640x480 just fine. I dont' know any video card that WON'T do 640x480. Windows installs default to 640x480 so it would be pretty bad for a manufactureer to not support the lowest common denominator.

(oh, and I have a Ti4600 that I used for about a yaer before recently switching to this 9600XT radeon, and I've run a lotta programs in 640x480 so I'm not just assuming... been there. done that. :) )

You'll be happy to know, Mr Swift, that I've upgraded since then and now play your game regularly against the totally brain-dead (as in loss of motor-function brain-dead) enemies from the last version I helped you test. Looks nice - I particularly enjoy the smoke.

1. No big surprise here. The binary doesn't work at all on my TabletPC.
