Ice shards

Hey, i'm doing something that involves ice shards flying toward an enemy and sticking in him. I was going to use standard sphere to poly collisions, problem is that there will be alot (40-60) of these shards, and i'd imagine this to be pretty slow. The reason i thought of doing this is, with a collision reponse of stop, the shards would stick right in the enemy, the effect i'm looking for.

Any other ways to do this?
