hi all, i was wondering if anyone had any tips on how they made the big explosions in Zelda windwaker...

sorry, not seen them. Were they sprite-based or some form of entity-explosion (there was something in the codea archives I think that breaks entities into their component triangles and makes them explode & bounce ala Starglider)

I'm pretty sure they just used 2d particles with alpha maps, and I think they rotated them around the central axis instead of animating the texture spinning, and the texture has like a spiral pattern on it. But I only have one video of a smoke effect from the game, so I don't have an actual explosion to look at.

sswift is pretty much correct, it's quite impressive how they've made something look so nice from simple textures and shapes.
