masked texture rendered?

say i had a model made up of 1000 polys and i applied a masked texture to it, so that most of the model is invisable, is the non visible model bit still rendered? what i mean is , would this be faster than using a model that was fully textured?

In general no, but depending on your graphics card, it might be slightly slower.
