What is a good free program that will import a .obj file and then export it to .3ds and retain the texture information?

thx :)

Blender

I tried Blender and it acts like it is loading my .obj's but once it is done it only shows a box.

Granted, I am new to Blender...am I missing something?

Just in case you are aiming to get an .obj into B3D...

ardee(Posted 2009) [#5]
Email me the file and I'll have a look, probably just a scaling issue.

Thx stayne...I got it to load in an .obj, but how do I make it create a .b3d?

I do not see a function for it.

stayne(Posted 2009) [#7]
You don't...you're stuck with the .obj. I use ultimate unwrap for converting models to .b3d. It's not free but it's incredibly handy and stable as a rock (for me it is anyway).

CodeOrc(Posted 2009) [#8]
yep, it was a scale issue...your were correct.

Now I am trying to learn the texturing system in Blender...argh......wish me luck.

So why does Blender drop the texture info on import of an OBJ ?

Try using Gile[s]

I believe it will import .obj, and Freborg has offered gile[s] up for free now.

CodeOrc(Posted 2009) [#10]
thx Pongo...Giles is doing what I needed.

grindalf(Posted 2009) [#11]
you could use deled to import the obj then export as 3ds then use pacemaker to import the 3ds and export it to b3d. should work right?

Ross C(Posted 2009) [#12]
Fragmotion too?

grindalf(Posted 2009) [#13]
fragmotion cost money though dosent it?

Wow, I just had this problem the other day! I solved it with this:

http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/

By the way, if you happen to be making your obj with Maya, you'll need to make it white before exporting it. If you don't, and then make it into a 3ds with Mesh lab to use in Blitz, it will always be grey no matter what you do, darkening all your textures by half.

Good luck! Mesh lab is a great free program for converting file types.

You can also use LithUnwrap :D
