Anyone got any tips on making good textures? Like for castles and things?

My tip is to search the web for existing tutorials on this subject. I'm sure there are many good tutorials.

Personally I like to make photos and then edit them to get tileable textures.

Just one hint:

Example: take a picture of a wall with some dirt and spidernets at the ceil edge, as well as some water traces etc. on the bottom edge. Copy this rectangle from ceil to floor, cut off the rest. Now you should have a quadratic picture.

I assume you have a painting tool that is capable of using an eraser on layers.

Duplicate the original layer 2 times. Move one layer 50% out of the center to the left side, and one 50% to the right side. Then collapse these two layers to one layer (in photoshop you'd hide the initial layer and then choose "merge visible layers"). Then set the eraser radius to 100 or so, 10% force or so, and slightly start erasing the obvious line in the center of the image. Finally collapse all layers, resize to something like 256*256 or 512*512 etc. and then export it as texture.

When applying the texture to your castle wall (eg. using Decorator) you should scale it in a way that will align ceil edge and floor edge correctly.
