Relative movement in animation

Hello - quick question that is driving me around the bend that may more suited for a 3dsmax forum - but it is related to b3d after all so I'm hoping someone can help me.

I am trying to animate a turret and have managed to set up parent and child objects the way I want so when rotating the turret itself the gun barrels rotate with it and so forth. I am also using an animation sequence created in 3dsmax when the gun barrels move into the turret and then glide back out to simulate recoil. All works great until I tilt the barrels upwards into the sky, then the animated movement is relative to the world rather than object orientation, so the gun barrels move sideways rather than back into the turret...

Hope someone understands what I mean and can give me a few pointers :)

Thanks.

As a guess cos I dont use b3d, so dont shout at me if this sounds stupid

Attach a pivot between the gun barral and the gun, then move the angle of the pivot and not the Barral.
