What is an average triangle count for a screen?

What is a good one, and what is a bad one?

That depends greatly on the system being used. My old 500 Mhz AMD with a Geforce 2 MX can only handle about 6000-7000 triangles on screen at once (in blitz3d) before it has problems. My laptop can handle a few hundred thousand before it has difficulties.

What matty said, with your customer target group in mind. Assuming you won't make the next doom3 engine, you should rather make sure your game runs nicely on weak and old hardware as well. So I'd say: use not more than 25 thousand tris (Trisrendered()). Also make sure not to use too many surfaces (eg. a few hundred).
