These forums are confusing.

Blitz3D Forums/Blitz3D Beginners Area/These forums are confusing.

sswift(Posted 2004) [#1]
These new forums are driving me nuts all being seperate. I have five different tabs open because I opened new messages in new tabs and I'm not sure which tabs have active topics I've already looked at and which don't, and I just noticed that the only way I can tell which forums I'm actually looking at on a particular active topics page is by looking at the number in the URL or scrolling down the page and looking for a forum name with MAX or PLUS or 3D in it.

Also searching for off topic posts to read amongst the beginner topics on each page is becoming tiresome! Bring back the off topic forums so people can post messages like this THERE instead of cluttering the beginner forums!

In short, to fix this:

1. Bring back off topic forum acessable to everyone. ONE off topic forum. (not 3)

2. Bring back general discussions forum accessable to everyone. ONE general discussion forum. (not 3)

3. Create a button I can press to get a list of all active topics in all forums.

4. Reenable the ability to post in forums of products you haven't purchased, because I sure as hell can provide help to people owning BlitzMax even though I haven't bought it.

5. And for put the updates back on the account tab and allow access to the forums where mark will post that there are new updates so that people can ask questions about the product changes, like what the 3D will be capable of when it comes out.

Also, what is with the 2 day downtime to upload some new forum code? It should take less than 20 minutes to do something like that?

[edit]
I just noticed that when I finished posting here I am taken to a page that says at the top forums/beginners area, and only the beginners area forum is listed below. So there is no way to tell which beginners area I was posting in without clicking on forums to go back to the forum list to see which particular beginners area I'm in. This is bad design.

Also, I am forced to now bookmark this thread to be able to keep track of it so I can find it again. I don't want to clog my bookmarks with hundreds of bookmarks here... I already have to do that to keep track of threads on slashdot...

wizzlefish(Posted 2004) [#2]
Yep - change it back to normal. BlitzCoder's better.

Robert(Posted 2004) [#3]
I agree.

Amon_old(Posted 2004) [#5]
I agree too.

GW(Posted 2004) [#6]
what do they say about "Fixing what isnt broke"?
Bring back the old forums! and dont take 3 days to do it!

smilertoo(Posted 2004) [#7]
meh, theyre just different, i suppose after a few days we'll get used to them.

Ross C(Posted 2004) [#8]
Agree with swifty!

Tri|Ga|De(Posted 2004) [#9]
I must say I'm allso with Swift

morduun(Posted 2004) [#10]
Agreed on all counts.

Ethan3850(Posted 2004) [#11]
No points for forum design. Better descriptions such as "Blitz3d/Beginners Area" and a "List all Forums" page might be quicker than redesigning them all again(?).

Tri|Ga|De(Posted 2004) [#12]
And why cant I post in the BlitzMax forum, must I buy Blitzmax first or what?

N(Posted 2004) [#13]
I agree with sswift entirely.

New forum layout is crap.

mag.(Posted 2004) [#14]
Sure 'off topic forum' will be back...
It's dissapear for a reason.

N(Posted 2004) [#15]
Mag: It will be back. Just not for a few weeks.

With it gone, people are going to be cluttering these fora with crap.

danjo(Posted 2004) [#16]
i also agree this new layout is awful.
we're all being led around in circles.

Beaker(Posted 2004) [#17]
I agree it is a mess. Also, the code archives needs a BlitzMax section, and the ToolBox a Mac section. Otherwise we will end up with a similar mess (or worse probly) to when BlitzPlus was released.

Akira(Posted 2004) [#18]
I also agree.

I think that the forums and showcase area etc.. should be made to operate more like they do on the www.blitzcoder.com site. The main reason for this is that the search facilities provided on the offical Blitz site are primative at best. Blitz Research should revamp their site to make it look more professional and I think either using the UBB forum system, or enhancing the current system to be more like UBB, would go along way to achieving this.

DJWoodgate(Posted 2004) [#19]
I do not know if anyone has noticed but the Blitzplus programming forum seems to have disappeared completely. Not that it bothers me, I never bought it, and lets face it, who is going to buy it now? Still I would have thought it was of more intrinsic value to people who do own blitzplus than an off topic forum, which at least does still exist. Seems strange to me, as all the other old forums still seem to be there. Maybe it just suffered an accidental death? Or should we read more into it? ;)

Curtastic(Posted 2004) [#20]
I didnt notice the blitzpuls and blitzmax pages at the top bar for a while.

Sometimes they dissappear after pressing the back button? So then you have to hit "community" and then it shows the other pages on that bar.

DJWoodgate(Posted 2004) [#21]
Yes, I know that, but the Blitzplus programming forum is no longer. It used to be forum 81, but is has vanished. Sunk without a trace. Extinct as the proverbial Dodo and only visiible in a googled afterlife. Joining it there is Forum 85 which has gone the way of all bug reports and has been squashed into oblivion. RIP.

WolRon(Posted 2004) [#22]

What the heck are you talking about. It's still there...

DJWoodgate(Posted 2004) [#23]
Egads, do you mean you can see it and I can't? Do you have second sight?

Ah, wait, maybe it is only visible to people who own blitzplus. How very cunning...

Confirmed. If you are not logged in, all things not Max are super sanitized.

wizzlefish(Posted 2004) [#24]
If you want to crowd a place with off-topic discussions, I think it would be more appealing to discuss it elsewhere -
Either BlitzCoder....or...why not my website? :)

Dock(Posted 2004) [#25]
I also agree that the new forums are confusing. If someone wanted to come along and discuss/decide which product (B3D,B+,BM) was best for their project, they're screwed. There's also nowhere for discussion of Blitz in general. The old forums seemed much better.

It's also impossible to check 'all active topics' for the whole forum, making it trickier to stay abreast.

DJWoodgate(Posted 2004) [#26]

I think this is the ideal place to discuss it. No point talking to myself now is there?

That depends. Anyway he has a point, maybe you should use his forum, I can talk to myself for hours there with no danger of any response at all. And talking to myself is very therapeutic.

No, it can lead to mental instability. You could have posted this on the off topic forum you know.

Look listen here. In the first place I did not start this thread. Secondly it should have been moved to off topic to begin with, since it has nothing to do with beginners.

Well yes, except this forum rearrangement is new to everyone so we are all nasty beginners now... and HE has taken off topic away from us, Stolen it from us, so where else was the OP to have posted it. Some black and stygian hole?

Well now we knows the answer to that one don't we my precious....

Erroneouss(Posted 2004) [#27]
> "Secondly it should have been moved to off topic to begin with, since it has nothing to do with beginners."
Offtopic = gone...

Genexi2(Posted 2004) [#28]
Offtopic = gone...

No it aint gone, its just unreachable by means of the site itself....you just need to find the other way there.

Erroneouss(Posted 2004) [#29]
oh!
i found the general disscussion!
whats the number for off topic?

DJWoodgate(Posted 2004) [#30]
I suppose this thread actually would have been posted to 87 in the bad old days. But now everyone seems to want 1 more than anything. It is very depressing.

BlackD(Posted 2004) [#31]
Or else, Blitz3D Beginner's Area will be turned into the new OFF TOPIC. Almost everyone here owns it. Personally, I wouldn't like to see that happen.

Dazzy(Posted 2004) [#32]
I agree too!

-=Darkheart=-(Posted 2004) [#33]
Totally agree with Swift on all counts.

Koriolis(Posted 2004) [#34]
I was precisely going to make a thread to state that the fact that as a Blitz3D user (and not blitz plus or blitz max) I can only post in the blitz3D section is ridiculous.
And serves in no way BlitzResearch, as it can only lead to frustration. I'm just hoping they don't think people will byu a product just to have access to a forum. Given it's entirely wrong I don't see what is gained by this access restriction.
Not to say it's not the first time I directly or indirectly face such arbitrary things here, and I must admit it's really getting on my nerves.

Actually I agree on other SSwift's points too.

Steve Elliott(Posted 2004) [#35]
I guess Mark wants us to actually code rather than chat on general discussion/off topic threads. ;)

In a way I like the format - if somebody asks a question or posts a tutorial you now know immediately what language it's aimed at and can find things quicker and so avoid using the poor search functions.

But there definitely should be a general discussion topic irrespective of language choice - and the search feature should cover all versions of Blitz. Blitz Coder's search facilities are a good example for BR to follow.

Qube(Posted 2004) [#36]
I like the idea of splitting up products better.

Ideally I'd like topics like "off topic", "graphics showcase", and similar cross linked topics being all linked together. So for example, if someone posts in "off topic" it appears in all the seperate forums etc, etc.

Panno(Posted 2004) [#37]
Thanks Good i'am not the only one :)
agree with sswift

RiK(Posted 2004) [#38]
I'm with you guys...

I'm not totally opposed to the splitting into product specific forums, but I do feel there should at least be one common general discussion area and that we (as registered users of at least one Blitz product) should be able to post in all the forums regardless of the product they relate to.

ford escort(Posted 2004) [#39]
/me agree with that.
posting only in registered product forum is a bad aproach
the strengh of blitzbasic is the community, all the users helping all the users.
this aproach definitively will kill a big part of this community
blitz products are similars, the problems that we all run in are similars so why not a blitz+ user can't help a bmax user just because he don't own a buid for bmax? think it's ridiculous...
so mark, bring us the ability to post in all the blitz sections back!!!

Ruz(Posted 2004) [#40]
man i feel pretty annoyed that it came out for the mac first. all us regulars seem to be a bit left out.

Big mistake to alienate your existing customers IMHO
If they had brought it out on pc first, there would have been quite big payday.

i just can't see the commerical sense in the way they have done it.

Dreamora(Posted 2004) [#41]
the old boards are not needed but the thing that is needed is a RSS feed similar to the german BB communities RDF in which you can specify which boards to include and how many of the last active threads etc.

I prefer RSS feeds over this annoying board browsing anyway ... FireFox live bookmarks :)

Tracer(Posted 2004) [#42]
i agree with Sswift, i have hardly been browsing the blitz forums lately due to the crappy forum design :(

Tracer

DNielsen(Posted 2004) [#43]
I love all

Tracer(Posted 2004) [#44]
Yeah, i find myself reading blitzcoder as well, i hate their forum system as well (which is why i 99% of the time used to use the blitzbasic.com forums), but the blitzcoder ones are now easier to use than the blitzbasic.com ones..

Tracer

BlackD(Posted 2004) [#45]
Hehe.. it's really frustrating seeing Mac users running into language and system problems already and not being able to tell them how to fix it. :) Maybe BR is underestimating the broad knowledge of some of the folks here. :\
