What's the cheapest (keyword "cheapest") terrain editor out there. Is Maplet good with terrain?

I just need to make a world with grassy or sandy terrain, it needs to be hilly, and it needs to have trees. The buildings I already know how to do. It's the terrain that troubles me....

A terrain usually is just a grey scale map so use any paint program to create a terrain.

Milkshape comes with a terrain generator too.

Maplet is not really a terrain editor.

Checkout the 'Toolbox' section on this site:

If you look in Other Tools several people are currently working on a free terrain editor called FLE. It's not quite done yet but already one of the better terrain editors available.

Other than that, I recommend ALE from Toolbox->3D Terrain Tools.

ALE is pretty special :)

I've tried ALE--and yes, it looks pretty good, I just can't figure out how to work it....do you guys know how?

ALE is the best choice though :)

A.L.E. is not free, but it is worth the price. :)

So as soon as Im not impoverished, I will be ordering it.
