Is one better/faster then the other? They're both pretty much the same thing right?

They are totally different things. Gnet is for finding other people running the same game/app as you. DirectPlay is for more general network/internet communication.

The last three games I've written have used a slighly modified GNET to help people find games. It's interface is easily plugged into any game that is already multiplayer. GNET just allows you to by-pass getting your friends' IP addresses (and, in my modified version, the port the game is running on).
