I'm looking for a good shareware/inexpensive paint program for OS X. I want to use it to draw a background for my next game. Does anyone have a recommendation?

GIMP - Great paint program. It is free, open source, and available for Mac, Linux, and Windows.

I've looked around lately, beacuse my Photoshop licence is on Windows, and ended up with Pixelmator from http://www.pixelmator.com/

I'm quite happy with it.

Photoshop Elements gets my vote. But I guess it depends on your definition of inexpensive...

I personally use Fireworks, but as you're after an inexpensive option, GIMP gets my vote.

I give a third to GIMP!

Another vote for pixelmator. It's a great team player when designing iPhone games. Also, it was developed on a Mac and only supports a Mac. None of this cross-platform crap from the dark side :)

Pixelmator in my opinion is the best shareware paint program on OSX. http://www.pixelmator.com/

Pixelmator again!

Pixelmator or Paintbrush (which is free).

I just hope that one of the next updates of Pixelmator will introduce a proper text tool.

Seashore is okay for more straightforward work.

Btw a little update is available: http://www.pixelmator.com/weblog/

x2 for gimp. It is as close as you can really get to photoshop without photoshop (even has a couple of nicknacks that PS doesn't have)
I use both.
