Loading an image font

Ok, I'm trying to load an image font to use in my program, but I'm not exactly sure how to do it on a Mac. In windows I just put

LoadImageFont("C:\Windows\Fonts\FontName.ttf", 13)

and TADA! we have a loaded font.

Unfortunately, I have no idea where fonts are on a Mac or how to load them into a program.
Would someone please help me with this? Thanks a million.
