Paint program?

Can anyone recommend a good, free (that bit's important... well so is "good") paint program that I can use to create 2D graphics with? I'd like something simple that allows me to edit the pixels - anything fancier I'm not too fussed on. I'm not a fan of using the Gimp to do standard pixel editing with. On the PC I'd use MS Paint just to get a rough job done (we're talking basic placeholders here, not final stuff) and Gimp to do anything that requires power, so a Mac program similar to paint is perfect. Which leads to the second question - how exactly do I get Gimp working on Tiger? |

Have you tried Seashore? It has the same basic functionality as Windows Paint. http://seashore.sourceforge.net/index.php |

You could also give a look at Pixen: http://www.opensword.org/Pixen/ |

http://www.gimp.org/macintosh/ You need to have X11 installed, but then it just works fine. For many simpler things I like to use Seashore. It's based on GIMP source, but is native so doesn't requier X11. ArtRage http://www.artrage.com/artrage.html while probably not what you're looking for, is pretty fun too. You need the $20 version if you want alphas, but the basic version is free. Claus: Thanks for pointing out Pixen, hadn't seen that one. Ragnar |

Pixen looks like it's definitely worth a shot. I'll have a play with that tonight. And I'll try out Seashore as well to see how it fares. |

I thought pixen was pretty bad because it is VERY slow and not terribly attractive. I would try Gimp, it has lots of features. And you might try GimpShop - a photoshop-alike version of Gimp. |

You could also try ChocoFlop. http://www.chocoflop.com/ |

Seashore makes me sad. So many interface quirks..."Enable alpha channel" is under "extras"... |
