How do I get a joystick working with MacOs? Do I need to install vendor specific drivers? (It's a USB joystick)

i coudnt get my joypad working either. the only thing i havent tried is an app called usb overdrive, which is apparently good for this sort of problem

Usb overdrive can see the joystick and I can get the mouse cursor moving with it, but Blitz Max can't see it. Rats!

no wonder... for me, BMax doesn't even recognize the KEY_NUMx (NumPad...) (maybe it's cause I m using a french keyboard but not sure about that)

But maybe you could try the following:
assign the directions/buttons of the joystick keyboard's keys
(like Joystick up = 'A' and so on...) and try how BMax respond to that... (might or might not work... didn't try it myself)
