Interesting terminal applications to try!

I've wanted to see just what can be done in the terminal after taking some college classes on Linux.

I've found w3m for internet browsing and also Irssi for basic IRC chatting.

What other neat terminal based applications do people like to toy with? Sometimes it is just nice to get away from all the window dressing and buttons and be able to focus on the task at hand.

Maybe I'm enjoying the terminal for the wrong reason but it is fun to see people's reactions to a windowless computer interface. I also enjoy the power of scripts and the notion of piping output from command to command.

I think png out is also interseting: http://www.advsys.net/ken/utils.htm
It will shrink a png down with no loss in quality.

It might also be fun to wrap some of these into a gui app.

I use alpine (its an imap mail client) sometimes when i am on a -very- crap internet connection (eg: gsm or my mum's house in uk). It works great in an ssh terminal.

I also use alsamixer a fair bit if i am working in a terminal already.

I'll look into these. I wonder if there are audio players that run in terminal...

"sudo rm -rf /"?
No. Really. Don't do that one.
On a more realistic side, I know it's a simple one, but I rather enjoy "write". :)
