Two things happened simultaneously.

I decided to install ubuntu on our desktop that was a total dog with who knows how much crap installed on Windows XP (we got it free from someone).

I also was going to buy blitzmax for my son to start learning as part of his schooling.

Put the 2 together, and I bought the Linux version, assuming the install would be straightforward. So far it isn't.

Here's what I've done. I downloaded the blitzmax130b.tar.gz. Copied it into the Home folder. and then extracted it.

Inside the extracted folder is the program "Max IDE"

Also, the usual suspects, bin, cfg, doc, docs, lib, mod, samples, src, tmp.

When I click on Max IDE I get the error "unable to determine BlitzMax version.

How do I fix this?

I have a rudimentary understanding of the terminal. I searched the forum pretty hard for a solution for this. Did a bunch of apt-get'ing. I also just upgraded to ubuntu 10.10.

Thanks for any help.

Firstly I would delete that version and download from this site (Account->Product Updates) latest version of BlitzMax which is 1.41.

If the problem remains with this version, fire up the terminal, change directory to ~/BlitzMax/bin and type ./bcc and post the results back here.
