If all the dependencies are met it' should work with all of them.

What dawlane said.

I've personally used Gnome and XFCE without problems, but KDE should work too.

I now prefer Gnome (GTK).

I used to use RedHat/Fedora (which is generally setup with KDE as default). Back then, I'd tried Gnome, and it was pretty awful.

Gnome with Compiz (fancy GL integrated effects) is rather nice, but since I mostly use it via NXClient I generally seen plain-old rendered windows).

The only thing is, if you want speed, you want xdm (the X Display Manager), and not the Gnome Display Manager (gdm). There is a big difference in speed between the two.

On mine, with gdm [as the display manager], with little or no programs running, the cpu was running at at least 30%; xdm, same situation, less than 10%.
KDE has crashed multiple times on me, which is unfortunate, as the "polish" was near comparable to Mac OS X.

I have no problems using OpenBox. This is based off of Gnome, but is more light weight.

I think fedora now uses gnome as the main one (the last few times i have tried it it has been gnome)
