Hi.

I was just wondering wether there is any reason why Windows would be better than Linux?

Although Linux doesn't have all the Microsoft stuff it does have the Office alternative (star office) which i think is just as good as MS Office. Also when it comes to games theres something called Cedega which seems to support alot of the games i would play.

Now having gotten those two things out of the way i can't see many other reasons for having Windows (except for BlitzMAX Windows dev which i can do on the familly computer).

Is there anything i missed?

ive just made a linux box too, its a bit strange at first but its slowly growing on me.
The main reason i wont go over to it is b3d and msn messanger which i use for audio calls to my friends and family overseas (there is gaim etc but no audio :(

Btw, if uve brought blitz max, cant u download a linux version free?

Skype is available on Linux.

I run two Linux desktops at home, no dual-boot or whatever.

Most games I want to play will run through Cedega, and if you can't stand OpenOffice, the GIMP, etc. most other stuff (pre .NET) will work OK through Crossover. Even IE 6 runs through Crossover.

Windows is easier for most people - it's familiar and since it's the number one OS, way better supported by manufacturers.

Once you get a Linux desktop installed and going though, maintenance is way easier than Windows. Apt-get is brilliant and really easy, and the amount of quality free software out there is impressive.

For MSN messenger try http://amsn.sourceforge.net/

Although I havent tried it yet it appears to be the MSN we all know and love but on Linux. They even released a Plus clone aswell. When i get a permanant connection to the internet on my comp i will use that (GAIM i can't stand).

I ended up getting Cedega but the two games i wanted to install (Rome: Total War and Guild Wars) will either not install properly (GW) or install and not let me run them (RTW) so i'm going to need to have a play around for a few hours i think.

Guild Wars is officially supported, so it should be working very well soon: http://digital-conquest.ath.cx/wiki/index.php/Guild_Wars

Rome Total War however is unsupported, and it looks like you won't have much luck with it:

It was last tested with 4.1 tho, so maybe works better in 4.4.1.

Make sure to check out the games database before investing in Cedega. Usually a minimum of four playability stars means it'll install and work very well.

Damn. Well i guess if RTW doesn't want to work i'm gonna be heading back to Windows :(
